Older HIV-infected individuals present late and have a higher mortality: a UK clinic cohort study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Current UK guidelines recommend initiation of HAART in all patients with a CD4 count of <350 cells/mm. The success of this policy depends on early HIV diagnosis. One-third of individuals in the UK have a CD4 cell count <200 cells/mm at diagnosis. According to the European consensus, late presentation for care refers to persons presenting with CD4 cell count <350 cells/mm or presenting with an AIDS-defining event, regardless of the CD4 count.

Older HIV-infected individuals present late and have a higher mortality: Brighton, UK cohort study
BACKGROUND Initiating therapy with a low CD4 cell count is associated with a substantially greater risk of disease progression and death than earlier initiation. We examined factors associated with late presentation of HIV using the new European consensus definition (CD4 cell count <350 cells/mm3) and mortality. METHODS Patients newly diagnosed with HIV infection at a UK clinic were recruited...

متن کاملHigh prevalence and excess mortality of late presenters among HIV-1, HIV-2 and HIV-1/2 dually infected patients in Guinea-Bissau - a cohort study from West Africa
INTRODUCTION HIV infected individuals with late presentation (LP) and advanced disease (AD) have been associated with higher mortality, higher cost of medical management, impaired CD4 cell count increment and potentially ongoing risk of HIV transmission. Here we describe the proportion of patients with LP and AD at an HIV clinic in Guinea-Bissau, identify risk factors and evaluate the outcome o...
متن کاملLate diagnosis among our ageing HIV population: a cohort study
INTRODUCTION With the advent of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), more people infected with HIV are living into older age; 22% of adults receiving care in the UK are aged over 50 years [1]. Age influences HIV infection; the likelihood of seroconversion illness, mean CD4 count and time from infection to development of AIDs defining illnesses decreases with increasing age. A UK study estima...
